El Limón is the waterfall people come to Samaná for. It drops around forty metres off the Sierra de Samaná into a pool cold enough to make you shout, and it sits fifteen minutes from Las Terrenas.
Most of the way is on horseback: about thirty minutes at walking pace, through tropical vegetation and past the coffee and cocoa plants that grow all over these hills. Riding is not required — you can walk the same trail — but the path is steep and, after rain, genuinely muddy. Guests who would rather not ride should say so when booking.
At the top there is time to swim in the natural pool before heading back down. The lunch version finishes with typical Dominican food and cold drinks.
The El Limón waterfall tour from Las Terrenas runs every day in the version with lunch, from two people, and pickup is included wherever you are staying in town.
