The bay itself — the wide, sheltered water between the peninsula and the mainland. Cayo Levantado and the mangrove channels of Los Haitises, the Victorian streets of Samaná town, and from 15 January to 25 March, the humpback whales that come here to breed.

Every winter the humpbacks cross from the North Atlantic to Samaná Bay to breed and to calve, and for ten weeks the bay is the best place in the Caribbean to watch them. Boats leave from Samaná town with a marine guide on board.
